John C. Little

Presentation Title: Societal Challenges of the Anthropocene – An Evolutionary, System-of-Systems, Convergence Paradigm

John received a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town and an MS and PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. He is currently Charles E. Via, Jr. Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. His earlier research focused on process dynamics in environmental systems but has now broadened to Anthropocene systems. John has been a visiting professor at Tsinghua University, China, University of Sydney, Australia, Swiss Federal Institute for Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag), Switzerland, University of Granada, Spain, Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment, France, and University of La Rochelle, France.

Siqi Zheng

Siqi is the STL Champion Professor of Urban and Real Estate Sustainability at the Center for Real Estate, and Department of Urban Studies and Planning, at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is the faculty director of the MIT Center for Real Estate. She established MIT Sustainable Urbanization Lab in 2019, and is the director of her Lab. She is also the faculty chair of the MIT Asia Real Estate Initiative. Prof. Zheng’s field of specialization is urban and environmental economics and policy, including climate change and real estate, sustainable urbanization, and urbanization in emerging economies.

Dejan Mumovic

Presentation Title: A Paradigm Shift in Evidence Based Policy Making: Building Performance Simulation in the Context of Energy-Health-Climate Nexus

Dejan Mumovic is a Professor of Building Performance Analysis and the Director of the UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering. Dejan’s research focuses on modelling aspects of building performance analysis including the application and development of advanced modelling techniques utilizing energy and indoor air quality performance data and simulation as a design driver. In the last 25 years Dejan has led, co-led or significantly contributed to 60 research projects, and co-authored over 300 peer reviewed publications. 22 doctoral researchers graduated under his supervision.

Borong Lin

Borong Lin is Vice Dean and Professor at the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University. He currently serves as Director of the Key Laboratory of Ecological Planning and Green Building (Ministry of Education), a member of the National Carbon Neutrality Expert Committee of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and a Fellow of the International Building Performance Simulation Association. Lin has long been engaged in fundamental theory and key technologies related to the built environment and low-carbon energy efficiency in buildings. He has published more than 150 SCI-indexed papers, with an H-index of 51, and has been listed as an Elsevier Highly Cited Chinese Researcher for four consecutive years, as well as among the World’s Top 2% Scientists.

Jinyue Yan

Jinyue Jerry Yan is a Chair Professor of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is an active member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. Professor Yan’s research interests include energy systems, renewable energy, and climate change mitigation. He has published over 400 papers in scholarly journals including Science, Nature Energy, and Nature Climate Change and is a highly cited researcher, with over 10 patents. He has received several awards including the Global Human Settlements Award, the EU Energy Islands’ Award, and Top100 Research2Business (Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences). In addition to his role as founding editor-in-chief of Nexus, he is the advisory editor-in-chief of Applied Energy, the founding editor of Advances in Applied Energy, and the founder of several international and inter-disciplinary research and development platforms and events.

Qingyan Chen

Qingyan Chen is the Director of the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR) and Chair Professor of Building Thermal Science in the Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, United States. He also served as the Editor-in-Chief of Building and Environment from 2008 to 2024. Chen’s current research topics include indoor environment, aircraft cabin environment, and energy-efficient, healthy, and sustainable building design and analysis. Chen has published three books, six papers in book chapters, and over 500 journal and conference papers, and has been invited to deliver more than 200 lectures internationally. According to Google Scholar, Chen’s publications have been cited by over 30,000 times with an H-index of 96. He has been awarded more than US$39 million research funds.

Jianlei Niu

Jianlei Niu is the Chair Professor of Building Environment and Energy in the Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is the editor-in-chief of the Elsevier journal Energy and Buildings. His technology contributions are in a broad area linking thermal and fluid sciences with building environment, and his current research topics include indoor environmental quality, thermal comfort, thermal energy storage, HVAC and urban microclimate. During his tenure with HKPolyU, he secured 18 RGC CERG/GRF grants, along with two ITF grants, two RFCID/HMRF grants and one RGC/NSFC joint grant, and one RGC CRF grant as a Co-PI. He has successfully supervised over 20 PhD students. He has won numerous honours and research awards, including the ASHRAE disinguished lecturer award and the SHASEJ Uichi Inouye Asia-International award. He was awarded the fellowship by three leading societies, ASHRAE(American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers), ISIAQ(International Society of Indoor Air Quality) Academy of Fellows, and IBPSA (International Building Performance Simulation Association) Academy of Fellows.

Yuguo Li

Yuguo Li is Chair Professor of Building Environment, Honorary Professor of School of Public Health, Associate Dean (Research) of Engineering at The University of Hong Kong. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Indoor Air. His research interests are in building environment engineering. His current research topics include city climate/environment, environment studies of infection and indoor environment. His work led to the findings of the roles played by airflow in the 2003 Amoy Gardens SARS outbreak. He carried out research on hospital ventilation in preparation for influenza pandemics for Hospital Authority and WHO. He contributed to the dynamic theory of natural ventilation and hospital ventilation. He publishes over 200 journal articles in engineering, environment, climate and health journals including Indoor Air, Climate Dynamics, PNAS and New England Journal of Medicine with over 46000 SCI citations (SCI h-index = 102).

Shengwei Wang

Shengwei Wang is the Director of Research Institute for Smart Energy, Chair Professor of Building Energy and Automation, and Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Professor in Smart Buildings. His research expertise and interests cover energy systems (e.g. air-conditioning systems) and building automation systems (BAS), energy-flexible buildings and building-grid interaction, zero/low energy buildings for carbon neutral communities, cleanroom air-conditioning systems, district cooling systems, data centre cooling technologies, and smart technologies (e.g., IoT, AI and distributed optimization) for buildings. Prof. Wang is particularly proud of the competitiveness and career success of the PhD graduates and fellows from his team in the academia and industry. Most of them are appointed as faculty members in reputable universities in Hong Kong, Mainland of China, Australia, UK and USA, as well as leaders and senior professionals in building and energy industries.

Wei Pan

Wei Pan is Head of Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), where he is also Executive Director of Centre for Innovation in Construction and Infrastructure Development (CICID), Director of Net Zero Laboratory and MiC Laboratory, and Professor in Construction Engineering and Management. From late 2022 to early 2024 Professor Pan was Acting Executive Vice-President (Administration and Finance) of HKU. Prior to that, he was Associate Vice-President (Research and GBA) and Associate Dean of Engineering (Masters) of HKU. Professor Pan’s research interests encompass prefabricated construction, Modular Integrated Construction (MiC), smart and sustainable construction, zero-carbon buildings, building energy consumption, life cycle assessment, advanced structural systems, and innovative materials. He has authored over 380 publications and supervised over 100 doctoral and post-graduate researchers. He is Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Engineering Sustainability (Emerald), Guest Editor of several journals including npj Urban Sustainability, ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering and Developments in the Built Environment, and sits on the editorial board of a number of other journals.
